I'm Happy with Canada's response: Haiti Earthquake

Postby Reider on Tue Jan 19, 2010 5:25 pm

There seems to be a lot of $ and help coming from Canada (individuals and government), to the earthquake rocked Haiti. Good to see. Those people need major help. Now, it seems like Canada wants to help with the long-term rebuilding of the country!

St. John's wants to help Haiti rebuild

ST..JOHNS (CBC) - St. John's municipal politicians say the city wants to help with the long-term reconstruction of earthquake-devastated Haiti. They say the city is looking at teaming up with other Canadian cities to sponsor the reconstruction of a public facility such as a school.

Yes it is good... hopefully they can get things rolling faster and get some temporary infrastructure up and running to handle the inflow and distribute vital supplies, because just getting the aid into the country is proving difficult.

They needed major help before. While some were giving it (I believe they were #2 on Canada's foreign aid list, but what that really meant in terms of on the ground help I do not know) it's too bad it's taken a disaster to put them on everyone's priority list.
And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I agree... if you look at the USA.. they have a major problem with poverty, homelessness, and unemployment, yet it seems to get ignored. The second something around the world has to do with war or helping others, they're right in the mix though. I think it's great that countries help others, but it's just sad that they largely ignore the problems in their own backyards. Canada isn't exempt from this either, but it's not quite as bad here.

In the end it's more about protecting their image then it is about helping the people in Haiti, and that may seem harsh but I guess sometimes the truth hurts. The people of Haiti could of use these resources just as badly before the Earthquake hit,

Remember a couple years back when the Liberals were whining about the Harper govt purchasing C-17 Cargo jets? I wonder how that worked out for us....

Couldn't agree more. My country has a long and storied history of "keeping up appearances" when it comes to aiding outside the border's yet...we can't help our homeless, or Vets, or the 30 million uninsured (one of which I will soon become). It is disgraceful! No offense to Haiti of course, but of all country's, mine should be fixing problems here at home first.

You hit the nail on the head. It's very unfortunate that some countries fight illegal wars, help during natural disasters etc.. but do nothing to help their own countrymen and women who are homeless and have nothing. One of the problems is the mindset of the people. "Just go get a job" etc.. But if you look at the last couple of years in the USA, TONS of people have lost their jobs and our now homeless etc.. even though they WANT to work. For many of the unfortunate, it is not even a choice.

Good post.

BTW The company I work for is probably going to go belly up soon and I still can't find a new job to replace it. I would love to move/work in Canada but from what I understand it is very difficult for an american to immigrate there. If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated...  :canadaflag

I'm not sure it's any more difficult for an American than it would be for anyone of any other nationality. Canada NEEDS immigrants to continue to grow.

What kind of skills do you have? What would you want to do?

I posses a class "A" CDL So I am legal to drive semis. But I've been driving a Concrete truck for eight years now so I would need to brush up on my Tractor/Trailer driving. I didn't drive a semi for very long when the mixer job came around. But I am a very fast learner.
